To kick off the official opening of the Baldivis Square Shopping Centre, a free street festival will be held on Saturday, October 28.

The centre supports eclectic, single-owner businesses, said the leasing manager, and that each tenant was carefully selected.

It opened earlier this year and has 15 tenants of speciality stores run by independent community members.

Baldivis Square features an IGA, gym, doctor, bakery, ice creamery, liquor store, nail salon, fish and chips, pizza, dentist, hairdresser, Indian restaurant and the Brother of Mine cafe run by Jos Whettingsteel, who worked with Jamie Oliver in London.

Director of Leasing for Axia Corporate Property Adam Musbah said the centre was a major asset for local businesses.

“We shied away from the easy option of securing just any tenant who came along to fill the space. Instead, we approached local operators who we thought were the right mix in the right location – people who live in the area and want to contribute to the fabric of the community,” he said.

“Our approach is very much long term – we work in close partnership with our tenants long after the leases are signed to ensure they remain viable.

“What we found is that by nurturing local operators, we could created a destination with a distinct local flavour that offers people experiences they cannot get anywhere else.”

Featuring a piazza for people to gather, public art and a community garden, Baldivis Square will soon boast a child care facility, newsagency, pharmacy and restaurant by the well-known Catalano family.

The free Baldivis Square Street Festival will be held from noon to 2pm.
